PERSONAL
PROFILES
Profile: Neil Herron
Born and bred in
Sunderland, 40 year old Neil is recently divorced and a father of two
boys, Troy (16) and Raigan (12).
Educated in Sunderland and with a degree from Northumbria University,
Neil set up his first business at the age of twenty one. This fish business
grew into three outlets and a primary processing operation. Running
alongside, Neil was also a small scale property developer and private
landlord in Sunderland and rural Weardale.
Neil expanded and
diversified the market trading operation as the fishing industry went
into decline and opened a discount food retail operation in the heart
of Sunderland's Park Lane Market, selling everything from fish to flowers,
from soap to sausages, from bananas to biscuits.
Then a visit from
a Trading Standards Officer changed all that and the prosecution of
greengrocer Steven Thoburn led to the birth of the Metric
Martyrs. The rest is history. The national campaign exposed who
really governs Britain, and for the first time supremacy of European
Union Law over British law was confirmed through the courts.
Ironically, Neil
and Steve were awarded the European Campaigners of the Year Award in
Brussels in 2001, beating the European Union's campaign launching the
euro notes and coins.
Today Neil also
fronts the campaign, along with Colin Moran, calling for a referendum
on the proposed EU Constitution, Referendum04
Neil, with others,
initiated the North East No Campaign when it was apparent that
the drive towards regional government was in no way coming from the
people, but from a very small number of activists. His investigation
of the unelected North East Assembly, who were pushing a pro-elected
regional assembly agenda, resulted in their public censure by the District
Auditor for unlawful use of public money.
Neil has also been a recent columnist for London Independent Newspaper.
Interests: Advanced scuba diver, skiing, circuit training &
cooking
