Marvellous response in Kent and Sussex! Colin Bullen reports that the West Kent Democracy Movement signed up over 1000 people on a recent Saturday in Bexleyheath, despite the fact that they were not allowed to set up a stall. "It is truly remarkable how many people are anxious to sign and willing to queue in the cold to add their names to the petition. Those who claim that the British people support the idea of an EU constitution, or even membership of the EU itself, are living in a dreamworld". The Democracy Movement and CIB also held a joint Referendum04 meeting in Hastings, addressed by Marc Glendening and Colin Bullen, and those attending were very forthright in their support for a referendum. The event also led to many letters in the local press, confirming the strength of feeling against Britain being railroaded into a single European state. |

| The Kingston branch of the Democracy Movement were also out on D-Day. John Moran writes: "We had our first Action Day in Kingston today whilst using the new Referendum 04 banners, livery and car stickers etc., and it was a terrific success. We took 1003 names and gave away hundreds of Ref 04 car stickers. What was most notable was the huge support and genuine thanks that most people on the streets showed to us for our efforts. If this level of support is replicated throughout the UK then pressure for a referendum will be irresistible." | ||
| Tynemouth Referendum04 Group spent D-Day at the market collecting signatures. "At times we had a queue waiting to sign up," reports Gillian Swanson. Judith Wallace said, "everyone was supportive bar one who wished to join the euro. He obviously misread the petition. Otherwise it was like pushing an open door. Also, many were angry at Blair for being contemptuous of the British electorate, and asked for petition forms to sign up their friends and family. We collected 753 signatures and it was fantastic to be able to play our part in a national effort." | ||

Elizabeth
Hewitson of Birtley says, "no-one is refusing to sign the petition
on our door to door collection in the area. Local shops, including the
newsagent and even the chirapractor, are taking petition forms and posters
to help network with their customers. It is fantastic to see the community
coming together to support Referendum04."
