Newcastle Lib Dem Councillor Joins The No Campaign
The
Peoples' North East No Campaign today welcomes Newcastle Lib Dem
Councillor, Gerry Keating, on board the campaign. Gerry
states:
"There
are three good reasons why people should vote against a
Regional Assembly for the North East:-
None
of its few powers can be "used to enforce the co-operation of
other bodies or people". What then is the point of such powers?
The
region is the poorest in Britain, but money will continue to be
stolen from us to support Regional Government in Scotland and
Wales.
A
North East Regional Assembly would have no extra resources apart
from those raised by a huge increase in Council Tax.
Any
government would be able to use a North East Assembly as an alibi
for its own deficiencies in the region."
North East No Campaign Director, Neil Herron welcomed the news:
"It is great to have Gerry on board and it will widen the
No debate and get the message across to the people of the North
East that they are being offered 'fake' devolution. It shows that
the Peoples' Campaign is not run or controlled, overtly or covertly, by
a single political party and its supporters."
